Money

One More Way to Save

I bought our daughter a Piggy Bank shortly before she was born and started putting change in it every now and then.  It was only recently (a few months ago) that my husband and I really started getting intentional about putting money in her bank.  Now any time she gets money from Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, etc the money goes straight in the bank.  And every time my husband and I find money floating around in the dryer, or come across change it always goes into the bank as well.

With Ava’s 1st birthday just days away (don’t get me started..) the money that we have in her bank is going towards her birthday party preparation and presents, and hopefully if there is money left over we can use it on her Christmas gifts as well.  This was such an EASY way to save money that we forgot we had.

  • Purchase a Piggy Bank for your little one.
  • Put any change left over at the end of the day in the bank.
  • Use the money toward whatever is needed at the end of a set period of time (3 months, 6 months, a year)..birthdays, Christmas, new shoes, back to school clothes, etc.  You will be surprised how much money you will have at the end of the year!
  • If your little one is older this is a great teaching tool!  Have them save a little bit of money here and there from various occasions, then when you think the time is right help your child count their money.  The learning possiblities are great!  (Goal setting, patience, and cause and effect…if I save my money then I can buy…)
  • GIVE!  Encourage your child no matter what age to give to those in need. Maybe your child can go to the store and pick out a small toy to donate to Toys for Tots, or some other organization.  Perhaps they could go with you to the store and fill up a grocery basket with their favorite foods and then donate to a Soup Kitchen or Homeless Shelter.

Both saving and giving have endless possiblities.  Do you have a money saving, or giving story you would like to share?  E-mail us at ideas@mommywho.com
